As an Activate America YMCA. we dedicate ourselves to a focused, community-based approach to service. Much of efforts shines through in our embodiment of the "Listen First" philosophy.
Listening requires more than the ability to hear. It requires an attitude, or general spirit, of seeking each individual’s perspective -- a genuine interest in getting to know others.
How we talk to people makes a big difference. Typically we focus on content of our speech, and pay very little attention to how we say things. Yet our tone and inflection sends a strong message to the listener; stronger, perhaps than the words we choose. The message we convey effects ohers' perceptions, and often, their choices.
Our staff and management currently practice the skills presented in Listen First. That means when you have a question, a concern, a need, or a suggestion we listen first -- and speak second. Listen First is not about convincing someone to do something, selling a program, or providing the right information. Listen First suggests a different spirit: respect for individual perspectives. care for others, and a desire to form partnerships with those we serve. We now focus on building strong relationships with our members, rather than simply providing our perspective. We strive each day to strengthen the YMCA family. |

Ligonier Valley YMCA participates in the Activate America Program initiated by YMCA of the USA. Not "just another program", but a philosophy, Activate America continues to evolve in response to your needs. Activate America helps YMCAs understand and reach out to "health seekers" in the community -- the folks that want to live well and grow strong...they’re just not sure how to start. The Group Fitness section of our brochure offers choices for our Health Seekers -- perfect first steps for anyone. Although all of our instructors welcome beginners and seasoned fitness participants to each class, Health Seekers classes progress a little differently. Instructors take time to answer questions, review form, and assist health seekers in anyway possible. We want everyone to feel comfortable and at home in our YMCA -- no matter their current level of fitness. For more information, please contact Cathy Graham, Project Manager for Activate America. |
