Welcome to the Ligonier Valley YMCA!

Committed to our members and the community, the Ligonier Valley YMCA is a place where you will always be greeted with a warm welcome. Through diverse programming and specialized training in key areas, we offer something for every member of the population. From infant and toddler care to the vibrant Silver Sneakers, the Ligonier Valley YMCA encourages all participants to engage in programs that builds a healthy spirit, mind and body. Two new programs we are very excited about are Healthy Eating Every Day and Health Seekers.

The Spirit of “Listen First”

Ligonier Valley YMCA is proud to be an Activate America YMCA. What that means to you is that we are taking a collective and focused approach to serving our community by becoming more in tune. Part of this effort comes forth
from a new philosophy called Listen First.

Listening to people requires more than communication skills. It requires an attitude, or general spirit of honoring and seeking each individual’s perspective. It can be thought of as a genuine interest in getting to know people.

How we talk to people makes a big difference. Typically we focus on content - the what of communication. Typically we pay very little attention to how we say things. Yet how we communicate with others is important, if not more so, as what we are trying to say. How we communicate affects how people feel, and this affects the choices they make.

Our staff and management are currently learning and practicing the skills presented in Listen First. That means when you have a question, a concern, a need, or a suggestion we will listen first and speak second. The spirit of
Listen First can be defined by what it is not. Listen First is not about convincing someone to do something, or selling a program, or providing the right information. Listen First suggests a different spirit - that we seek to be respectful,
that we care for people, and that we desire to form partnerships or collaborative relationships with others. Instead of our goal being to communicate information, our goal is to build a relationship with our members, even form friendships.
This requires that we adapt an attitude of honoring each individuals’ perspective, and express a genuine interest in getting to know people. It is more important to get to know someone than to sell a membership. It is more important to communicate understanding than to provide information. It is more important to know you as a friend than a member.

Health Seekers

Ligonier Valley YMCA has recently joined the Activate America Program initiated by YMCAUSA. This is not a program, rather a philosophy that will evolve over the next five to ten years. Activate America helps YMCA’s understand and reach out to health seekers in the community. Health Seekers are folks that want to become healthier; they’re just not sure how to start. With in the Group Fitness section of this brochure you will see classes denoted with Health Seekers. These classes are perfect first steps for anyone. Although all of our instructors welcome beginners and seasoned fitness participants to each class, Health Seekers classes will progress a little differently. Time will be taken to answer questions, review form and assist health seekers in anyway possible. We want everyone to feel comfortable and at home in our YMCA, no matter their current level of fitness. For more information contact Cathy Graham, Project Manager for Activate America.
